LJ Search Engine time...
So, my dad mentioned as part of his christmas wishlist the following:

"My Great Grandfathe was in the 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) and at the end of his twenty years service he received a "Long Service and Good Conduct Medal" in 1891. I thought it would be nice to have a replica medal with ribbon if they weren't too expensive. I should think that each soveriegn would have had a different one. His one would be Victorian."

A quick google offered up no obvious places to get this but I thought I'd ask you lot since, you know, a lot of roleplayers, a few re-enactors... I figured that one of you is bound to know where to get such things... :)

Yes, they seem to have the Long/Meritorious Service ones back to George V but not before.

Define "too expensive"? I shall ask my chum who knows such things...

That was my dad's words. I'm personally thinking its a cool present. The ones on the site that [info]taimatsu listed above were 35 quid and I don't consider that to be beyond the realms of possibility. If you can get me a ballpark cost though then I can worry about whether its too much later. :)

http://www.medals.org.uk/united-kingdom/united-kingdom181.htm - shows the different medals for different sovereigns.

Can't find one for Victoria on sale anywhere though...

You can get miniature replicas (eg. here), but I can't find any full sized ones.

Regimental history here.

More detail and you can probably get his service record too, or I can.

Do excellent replica medals at good prices

think it may be better value to buy an original than to commission a
repro.

Here is one on ebay.

It is a very complex design. You could possibly have one copies and then
engraved with the right name but you would still need an original to work
from.

Have a search for Army Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. There may be
others around. Look for medal dealers. I don't think that they will be too
expensive.

Found it. £12

You are awesome. Cheers. :)

And you may be flattered to know you were the person I was thinking would be most likely to come through on this one. ;-)

Not a problem from my POV at all, Matthew is a really useful chap to know!

And its the sort of thing that I really like the idea of - so good luck on it, I hope you get things all sorted and that your Dad is pleased.

(and yes, I am a touch flattered)

:D

Well pass on my thanks to him as well. And it is a really nice different thing as a present. I've ordered the 12 pound replica that you found for me and I reckon it should arrive before I go home for christmas. If not my dad gets an extended christmas. :)

Surely will do!

If you can find out the full set of medals which were awarded odds are you can get the whole lot through the same supplier - as long as the quality is okay (which it seems to be).
